Summary of Jam Session:
In this session 3 critiques. Troy – Outdoors/Apparel. Sarah – Backyard Play Equipment. Sam – Mens Skincare. Additional topics covered: Product Tags, Product Page practices, Deep Product Research and Experiences.
Critiques:
Critique 1
0:15:00 – Critique number 1 is for Troy, https://out-livn.com/. This is an outdoors apparel store, selling hats, shirts, backpacks, mugs, tumblers and more!
Homepage: First thing we noticed is Wheelio popped up right away. Wheelio should be set on exit intent only. The collection names were very confusing and had to be explained. Your homepage should be clear, customers shouldn’t have to click on the link to find out what it is. The navigation was confusing, Tanner explains how a typical apparel store is laid out with gender and collections.
Collection: This store has 3-4 sub niches within the main niche of Outdoors. Aleks explains how Troy can organize his sub niches then have his product categories as a filter on the collection page. This way not every customer has to scroll past hunting or fishing to get hiking etc.
Product Page: Changing ATC button from red to green. The color red has a negative connotation to it. Remove payment icons under ATC and replace with 3-4 value propositions. Customers haven’t committed to a purchase yet, so credit card options are not relevant at this stage. Pain or pleasure icons will entice your customers to take the next step. Minimum font size on the product page is 16px, anything below causes issues with readability.
Cart: Turn off special instructions in the cart. This has been tested and proven that your cart will convert better without this feature. Almost all of your customers will not use this section and it is just another distraction.
Critique 2
0:52:00 – Critique number 2 is for Sarah , www.playwildusa.com. This is a backyard play equipment store selling swings and kites.
Homepage: Changing the banner text from “Free Shipping” to “We Pay Shipping”. This tells the customers that there is a cost involved and you are covering it, not them. Also, when reviews start coming in, add the stars below the products for more trust.
Product Page: As mentioned in the above critique, remove payment icons under the CTA and replace these with 3-4 value propositions that will entice your customers to take the next step. For your product images, remove the hover zoom feature as this is very clunky on mobile.
Critique 3
1:38:45 – Critique number 3 is for Sam. This is more of a discussion with Sam about his next steps in potentially launching a skincare brand for men. Tanner has a lot to say about this niche and offered Sam some great advice and experience in this niche. The struggles and constant uphill battle of this niche.
Noteworthy Topics:
0:29:50 – Product Tags – In Shopify when you are creating product tags remember that it is case-sensitive. For consistency of naming, decide whether you are going to use all lowercase or uppercase.
0:33:45 – Product Page – Quick fixes that will improve prototypicality and customers psychology as well as readability.
1:38:45 – Deep Product Research – Tanner dives really deep into his past experiences with a skincare product and product research.
